yi.org is a Dynamic DNS Provider. Dynamic DNS Providers give you a convienent way to access your computer, no matter where in the world you are, or how often your computer moves around or changes IP addresses. If you want to run a webpage from a home internet account (most of which use Dynamic IP addresses), get a free .yi.org hostname for a small project instead of buying one, or travel around the world with your laptop, hosting a live webcam feed whenever you can plug it into the Internet, yi.org can help you.

Simply create a yi.org account, create a name for your webpage, install some client software, and set up a server to send your idea out from your computer to the world. If you have to disconnect and reconnect, it doesn't matter; even if you have to unplug your computer and plug it back in on the other side of the planet, it doesn't matter; your client software will tell yi.org that your internet connection has moved, and within minutes people will be able to get ahold of your idea again, whether people are just you or the whole world, or your idea is a nice webpage, a BitTorrent Tracker, or just a private SSH account for you to get ahold of your private files.

yi.org was launched in March of 1999. It was a FastCGI remake of the original nx.org code, which I wrote in early 1998. The newest revision of yi.org's DNS and web engine, WeedNS (Web Enabled Easy Dynamic Name Server), which the current website is based on, was written in 2003. yi.org's webserver is plugged into the ultra-fast fibre-optic Internet feed of WeDoHosting.com in Victoria, BC, Canada, in the beautiful suburb of Royal Oak, just up Commerce Circle from the Ashton Canadian Military Armoury. Most of the development on this version of yi.org has occured on Pender Island (in the Georgia Strait between Vancouver Island and the rest of BC, Canada), and in Downtown Victoria.

yi.org has taken a lot of time, money, and effort to bring together and keep together over the years. Currently there is maintenence, development, and translation work going on and there are monthy fees to be paid for the bandwidth yi.org consumes.

Most of yi.org's service is provided for free. You can register a hostname for free beneath the .yi.org domain (or one of several other domains), and always keep it's information up-to-date free of charge.

How is it done? Where does the money come from?

Well, if you want a top-level domain (.com, .net, .biz, etc), you can register it with yi.org for a fee and use the same Dynamic DNS service with them. If you already own a domain, you can transfer it's registration to yi.org, or buy yi.org DNS Hosting without a transfer.

But Domain Registrations don't always pay for the expense of yi.org's bandwidth consumption, and the hardware could use upgrading to make it faster and more reliable.
